(A view of part of my home music studio)
I download a MIDI file of a song I like from any of the free sites that have the song I want (or sometimes I start from scratch if it isnt available). The next step is to separate the different instrumental parts of the song, making sure there are no duplicate parts. Often times there are double guitar parts or a vocal and backup vocal part that overlap which sound bad in Rust, so its important to identify these parts and remove them so only one instrument is playing each part of the song.
Next, I isolate the drum track if there is any and export that as its own MIDI file to add to the Drum folder in the MIDI pack so people can play drum parts in Rust as well as on the melodic instruments. Its important to remove the drum part from any song that wont be played on the drums because it will make the song sound really bad. (If youve ever heard someone messing around at Outpost, youve probably heard the muddy sound of someone using an unedited free MIDI file that has drums in it but is being played on the piano, which of course sounds horrible).
The last part is to save the file and listen to how it sounds in Rust. Usually after doing these two main things, it sounds good, but sometimes theres still more editing to do, and sometimes specific parts just need to be removed even if its part of the song because afterall, Rust isnt a music engine, its a 1st person shooter game with MIDI support added in later, which brings me to my next point...
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a standardized way to transmit and store music. It doesnt hold sound, but it does record musical notes, timing/tempo, pitch information and sustain/sustain pedal, meaning its basically the same thing as playing a real instrument as long as you have something to generate the sound. Thats where Rust comes in. I use Rust as my music generation program instead of a Digital Audio Workstation or some other music program. This allows me to use the gameplay footage to sync up and create music video and other content.
With more than 10,250 songs edited and fit just right for Rust musical instruments, you're sure to find hundreds of your favorite songs with the music organized by each instrument, and within the piano section which is the biggest, it has music genres such as: rock, hip hop, pop, electronic, soundtracks, memes, national anthems, reggae, Latin and more!
This project has been in the works for 4 years now and is still being updated about every 6 months with hundreds of new songs. If you find any songs that sound bad or have some kind of error, feel free to let me know on the Discord and I will fix it ASAP. Some errors are expected and cant always be fixed without destroying the song, but most of them sound great and I use them regularly.
